After Norway at Wembley, England travel to Basel to face Hodgson’s former side Switzerland on Monday.

He said: “We want two good results, starting tomorrow night, to get that feel-good factor back.

“It will be a young team, for sure, with some very interesting young talents and players of enormous potential.”

While making it clear no-one is expected to make their full debut from the start, Hodgson added: “It is a friendly game that gives us a chance to find out more about some of them.

“There is a lot of anticipation. The players have only been together since Sunday evening but we seemed to have crammed an awful lot in during those training sessions.

“I get the feeling the players can’t wait to kick off this campaign. The players are ready to go.”

Jack Colback is the only injured player, and Hodgson looks likely to continue with Danny Welbeck in attack after the striker completed his £16m move to Arsenal from Manchester United.

“The biggest bonus for him is him is he is going to a club where he will get more starts and more playing time. It is not easy for players who don’t get a lot of playing time at their clubs to come and play 90 minutes for England.

“I’m pleased for him. Of course I pick him all the time so I think Arsenal have signed an excellent player.

“And I cannot deny that the more they play and the more experience they get, especially at Champions League level, the better it is for me as England manager.”
