‘Work ethic’ rewarded

Danny Welbeck reckons England’s superior work ethic was the key to victory over Switzerland.

The Arsenal striker scored twice in the second-half as Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions got their European Championship 2016 qualifying campaign off to the best possible start with a 2-0 win in Basel.

Welbeck, 23, said: “Once we got the first goal I think we were in control and we played a good team game.

“The work ethic all round, everyone was playing for each other, and that was very important.”

Having broken the deadlock on 58 minutes, Welbeck sealed the three points deep into added time on 94 minutes, finishing off a counter attack.

He added: “We were sat back a little bit deeper, and we had the pace to get in behind them.

“Once Raz [Raheem Sterling] took the ball on the wing and played it to Rickie [Lambert], I knew he had the ability to slide me in. Thankfully he did that and it was a nice finish.”
