Will Ferrell – yes, the comedian – will play for the Mariners in Thursday’s spring-training game against Oakland, the club announced Wednesday.
Ferrell will appear in four other games on Thursday and attempt to play every position on the field for all 10 teams, all part of production for a comedy special from the group Funny or Die that will air on HBO. The project is dedicated to the fight against cancer, according to the Mariners’ press release, which included some humorous quotes from general manager Jack Zduriencik.
Another goal for Ferrell from this is to honor Bert Campaneris’ historic 1965 feat of playing all nine positions in a game. Ferrell will be playing every position on the field for 10 different teams on the same day, and Campaneris is expected to be there with Ferrell as he begins his effort.
Ferrell’s day will be covered on social media using the hashtag #FerrellTakesTheField, and it will be chronicled in an HBO special to air later this year. MLB players, managers, coaches, executives and fans will also be featured.
Will Ferrell will be playing in the following games as part of the special:
March 12 (all times Pacific; subject to change)
12:05pm Seattle Mariners at Oakland Athletics (HoHoKam Stadium)
1:10pm Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Tempe Diablo Stadium)
2:10pm Cincinnati Reds at Arizona Diamondbacks (Salt River Fields at Talking Stick)
4:05pm San Francisco Giants at Chicago White Sox (Camelback Ranch)
6:15pm Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres (Peoria Stadium)
