Victor Sanchez : Former LumberKings pitcher dies at age 20

Victor Sanchez, a 20-year-old pitching prospect in the Mariners organization who pitched a no-hitter for Clinton in 2013, died Saturday in his native Venezuela.

Victor Sanchez’s agent Rafa Nieves confirmed that the 20-year-old had passed away, according to a report on MLB.com. Just one month prior, Sanchez was swimming in his home country of Venezuela when he was struck by a boat, according to CBS Sports.

According to MLB’s report, Sanchez had been in critical condition since the accident on February 14, 2015. He sustained a double skull fracture and a brain hematoma. Sanchez underwent surgery and was un a medically induced coma.

Sanchez had been a starting pitcher and was signed by the Mariners in 2011. MLB had ranked Sanchez as the 11th-best prospect in 2014.

In 2013 Sanchez threw a no-hitter for the Clinton, Iowa Lumberkings (see video below). It was Sanchez’s 27th professional start.
