Germany beat USA 1-0 but both teams advance to knockout stage

Date: June 26, 2014

Result: USA 0-1 Germany

Venue: Arena Pernambucano, Recife

Attendance: 41,875

Match overview: Germany beat USA 1-0 in rainswept Recife but both teams still qualified for the knockout stage because of Portugal’s narrow win over Ghana. Thomas Muller scored his fourth goal of the tournament, a brilliantly-taken first-time shot that was curled low past USA keeper Tim Howard, who had pushed the ball out in the edge of the area following a USA corner. Germany were in cruise control mode for most of the match. USA tried to match them but could not muster a single shot on target during the entire game.

Key moment: Germany’s goal from Muller in the 55th minute confirmed their dominance. From then on, there was little way back for USA.

Man of the match: Philipp Lahm. Germany’s captain excelled in the defensive midfield role and instrumental in Germany’s dominance of possession.

Matter of fact: USA’s qualification for the second round ensured three CONCACAF teams in the knockout stages for the first time.

Talking point: GIven the close friendship between the respective coaches Jurgen Klinsmann and Joachim Low, there had been much talk beforehand of a possible deal between the two teams to ensure their progression to the second round. But Germany’s desire to win was never in doubt, with Klinsmann’s men doing just enough to ensure they came out on top.
