St. Louis marathon winner never ran the race - Watch

ST. LOUIS – It’s official – Andrea Karl, a graduate student at Washington University is the real winner of the 2015 Go! St. Louis Marathon.

A 26-year-old woman who was initially thought to have won the St Louis Marathon has been disqualified after race officials determined she did not complete the entire course.

Kendall Schler is believed to have entered the course following the final checkpoint and was then the first woman to cross the finish line – ahead of eventual winner Andrea Karl.

“It’s a difficult situation for everybody, including the people who run a fair race and don’t get the recognition they should receive,” Nancy Lieberman, president of the St Louis Marathon, told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.

“I said to her, ‘It looks like you perpetrated a fraud.’ I have nothing legitimate that says she officially started and ran 26.2 miles in 2014 or 2015.”

Karl, a doctoral candidate at Washington University in St Louis, won in a time of two hours, 54 minutes and 28 seconds.

But when she crossed the finish line, she was told another woman had won.
Schler apparently pulled the same trick last year, when she was believed to finish in third place and qualified for the Boston Marathon.

Lieberman said she contacted Schler on Wednesday and told her she would be disqualified unless she could provide photos of her along the course.

Schler did not and had her times from both races erased, while her name was removed from the Boston Marathon’s online list of entrants.

No times were electronically registered from Schler’s official bib, which she had covered with a shirt, violating marathon rules.

She had also removed the timing strip from the bib both this year and last year.

Schler took credit for the win on Sunday, posing for a picture with retired three-time Olympic gold medallist Jackie Joyner-Kersee and accepting a $1,500 prize.

“There’s a euphoria the winner gets, breaking the tape and having the crowd cheer,” Lieberman said.

“The true winner did everything right and didn’t get her due.”
