Shaw: ‘I feel no pressure’

Updated: July 23, 2014

Luke Shaw says he feels no pressure ahead of his first season with Manchester United.

The England defender left Southampton to join the Old Trafford club in June – and following the recent departure of long-serving Patrice Evra to Juventus, he will most likely be Louis van Gaal’s first choice left-back.

And the 19-year-old claims he is ready to come into the team and replace the Frenchman as United prepare to get their pre-season under way against LA Galaxy on Wednesday evening.

Shaw’s form with Southampton and England last season attracted the attention of several clubs

“I don’t feel any pressure to come in for Evra,” revealed Shaw ahead of the game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.

“He has been great for the club for the last ten years and I hope I can carry that on.

“I will just try to focus on my own game, what I do on the pitch.

“I’m looking forward to trying to impress the new gaffer.”

Shaw signed for United from Southampton after being part of the England squad in the World Cup earlier this summer.

The former U16, U17 and Under-21s defender had attracted the attention of a number of clubs after an impressive campaign at St. Mary’s last time around, reportedly including his boyhood club Chelsea.

But the Kingston-born starlet believes his development would be best served at Old Trafford, where he has signed an initial four-year contract.

“Manchester United is the biggest club and it will push me to do my best,” he added.

“I signed a contract here because I know what the club is capable of and I know I will improve at the club.”

England are next in action at Wembley on Wednesday 3 September, when Norway are the visitors.
