Jose Mourinho went to see Serbia star Milenkovic in action during an international break earlier this season.
The manager appeared to have identified the Fiorentina centre-back as his solution to United’s defensive problems.
And United are pushing ahead with a deal to sign the defender – even though Mourinho has been sacked!

That is according to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, who claim Milenkovic’s agent is talking to United over the Christmas period in order to get a deal done.
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is keen to bolster the squad and help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in his new role as manager.
The Red Devils are NOT expected to spend big in the January transfer window – instead wanting to reserve funds for when a new permanent manager is installed next summer.
But it appears as though talks with Milenkovic’s agent have reached a point where a January move is viable.
Fiorentina will want a hefty fee for the 21-year-old and his contract expires in 2022 – so there’s no pressure from their end to sell.
United would therefore have to make a tempting offer to get Fiorentina to sell midway through the season.
Milenkovic is supposedly valued at £45m (€50m) in Serie A – a pricey acquisition even for United midway through a campaign.
A summer deal may therefore be more realistic for all parties concerned.
Meanwhile, Matteo Darmian is tipped to leave United when the transfer window opens next week.
The Italian has failed to convince in the Premier League and is said to have attracted plenty of interest from Serie A sides.
Darmian excelled at Torino before securing his move to Old Trafford 2015.
Talk of a move to Juventus has died down in recent weeks but he still has plenty of suitors.
