Man Utd news: Jose Mourinho will NOT get transfer money because of one player - Keown | Football | Sport

Manchester United manager Mourinho is determined to strengthen his squad when the transfer window reopens in January.

Back in the summer, the Red Devils boss craved the arrival of a centre-half with Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng, Diego Godin and Yerry Mina all pursued.

The Manchester United manager also wanted a right-winger to provide his squad with some much-needed balance.

However, Ed Woodward failed to give him the cash he craved.

Ever since, the United boss has been throwing tantrums, not content with the players at his disposal.

One new recruit, however, has barely featured.

Speaking today, Mourinho insisted Fred would not become a regular for United until the club were better defensively.

“Step by step. You have other players at other clubs who needed time and some of them played even less than Fred,” he told the Daily Mail when asked about the Brazil international.

“I think Fred, when the team is defensively stronger and doesn’t need in midfield people that are more worried in giving some balance to the team than being involved in creation and the attacking dynamic, the day we are stronger defensively, I think the horizons for Fred change completely.”

Keown, however, believes Mourinho’s reluctance to play Fred weakens his argument.

“You look at Fred, a player United spent £52million on who cannot get a game,” he said.

“Are United really going to commit another £52m or more to Mourinho in January to strengthen the squad?”

Known has also taken aim at Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku for their poor form.

“Watching them this season, both players have been like statues,” he added.

“Pogba takes so many touches on the ball. Everything looks choreographed with him — he doesn’t seem to do anything spontaneously.

“For me, Lukaku just watches the game.

“Yes, he was effective in United’s second goal [against Arsenal] after coming off the bench but I don’t see him make runs into the channels.

“I have said before that he needs to play less like a pussy cat and more like a tiger.”
