Butler has been at the centre of plenty of trade rumours this season after requesting a move over the summer.
However, no team initially proved willing to meet the Timberwolves’ demands to part ways with the 29-year-old shooting guard.
Butler has featured in 10 games so far this term as Tom Thibodeau’s team have gone 4-9.
However, it seems his time at the Minnesota Timberwolves has come to an end with the 76ers in for him.
NBA insider Shams Charania has revealed the Philadelphia-based organisation have held successful talks with the Timberwolves, as per league sources.
“Sources with @JonKrawczynski: Philadelphia is finalizing a deal with Minnesota to acquire Jimmy Butler,” Charania wrote on Twitter.
Charania soon added: “Philadelphia package to Minnesota includes Robert Covington, Dario Saric, and likely a draft pick, league sources said. Sides exchanged medicals to complete deal.
“Minnesota has traded Jimmy Butler and Justin Patton to Philadelphia for Robert Covington, Dario Saric and a 2022 second-round draft pick, league sources tell me and @JonKrawczynski.
“Sources: Philadelphia’s Jerryd Bayless has also been traded to Minnesota as part of Jimmy Butler deal. Covington/Saric/Bayless/2022 2nd for Butler and Patton.
“Butler nearly sat Friday night’s game — after intending to play — as Philadelphia deal took form. Sides finalized agreement before Minnesota flew out of Sacramento.
“Sources on @TheAthleticNBA @WatchStadium: Minnesota and Philadelphia have trade call with the NBA on Monday to complete the Jimmy Butler trade.”
News of Butler leaving the Timberwolves comes days after NBA expert Leigh Ellis slammed the four-time All-Star.
“They should control the situation and tell Jimmy Butler that he isn’t playing until he is traded,” Ellis said.
“Because Jimmy Butler is right now humiliating the franchise by saying he wants to leave and wants a trade.
“He’s waving the towel with the Golden State Warriors fans.
“I think if you’re in the front office at the Timberwolves you need to sit down and say: ‘This has to end, he’s not playing any more’.
“He’s not going to be a part of this franchise anymore, he’s going to be sat down until he’s traded.
“So, I think the situation is in their control.”
