The Blues slumped to a shock 2-1 defeat against Wolves in midweek.
The result leave them a whopping ten points behind pace setters Manchester City ahead of their clash with Pep Guardiola’s side.
Wise reckons the gap could already be too big.
“From a footballing point of view, the Manchester City game this Sunday is the biggest challenge of Chelsea’s season,” he said.
“City are setting an example of where Chelsea need to get to as a team. I see City dominating for years to come.
“I see the game finishing as a draw, a very tight game where Chelsea will allow Manchester City more possession than they would normally do, setting up to hit them on the break.”
Wise, speaking as he launched the inaugural Sportsperson with a Personality Awards sponsored by kwiff, added: “I can’t see Chelsea challenging for the title.
“It’s Sarri’s first season and he’s already stated he needs to teach the team about his approach and the way he wants to play football.”
Sarri himself has earmarked problems that need resolving before Chelsea can rival City.
“We have a problem to manage the match at the moment,” he explained.
“In the last two matches we played well for 55, 60 minutes but at the first difficulty we blacked out.
“In the first match [a 2-0 win over Fulham] we were lucky because they didn’t score.
“In the last match [against Wolves] we were a little unlucky as our opponent had five shots and only two on target, and we conceded two goals. But, after the first goal, we went into [a] blackout and were not able to react.”
When asked to identify the source of the issues, Sarri added: “It’s not easy to answer.
“I saw in the last matches that when there is the first difficulty we blacked out, we didn’t react as a team but as 11 players in 11 different ways, so it is a big problem.
“I knew sooner or later we would have to deal with these difficulties.
“When you change the way of playing, the way of football, you need to change the mentality, and you need to change the mentality of 25 minds.
“It is not a quick [process].
“It is very difficult, as we saw in [the games against] Liverpool and Manchester United, but after the solution of the difficulties, you can create something very important.
“We need a collective target, it can give us motivation, and that can gives us determination.
“I saw that in some matches we lack determination, like in the last match, we were not able to have the right determination to win the match.”
