The Vikings re-signed wide receiver Jerome Simpson to a one-year deal Friday for the third consecutive offseason despite a possible suspension.
It’s Simpson’s third consecutive one-year deal with the Vikings.
Bringing Simpson back to Minnesota for a third consecutive season gives the Vikings four experienced receivers. Cordarrelle Patterson, a rising star and Pro Bowl returner as a rookie last season, worked his way into the starting lineup because of his play and the fact that Simpson was arrested on a DWI charge late in the season.
Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said there hasn’t been a conclusion whether Simpson will be suspended for the DUI charge
“We felt comfortable enough after the new coaching staff had met with him and understand the whole circumstance behind that last arrest that we re-signed him back to a one-year deal,” Spielman said
. The other starter is Greg Jennings, while Simpson and Jarius Wright, an underrated player who is entering his third season, will be used when the Vikings go to three- and four-receiver sets.
Don’t be surprised if the team picks up another receiver along the way to further bolster the position.
