Randy Howard was killed on Tuesday (June 9) during a shootout with a bounty hunter in his home in Lynchburg, Tenn.
Randy Howard was facing a series of charges, including drink driving, possession of a firearm while intoxicated, driving without a valid licence and possession of drug paraphernalia, when he skipped a court date, reports WSMV.
According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine, bounty hunter Jackie Shell attempted to bring Howard in, but Howard shot at him. Shell – who was injured in the incident – returned fire, killing the singer.
The agency is investigating the shooting.
Howard’s neighbor Terry Dotson said: “He was a giving person. He would do anything for you. If you asked for the shirt off his back, he’d give it to you. He was a good guy.”
“He said he wasn’t going back to jail,” he added. “That’s what he told me.”
Randy Howard enjoyed a music career which included performing with stars such as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. Hank Williams III is among those who have paid tribute to the musician.
