Ramsey joins U17 set-up

When the England U17s kick off their FA International Tournament campaign this evening, they will have two hugely experienced coaches in their dugout.

Head coach John Peacock will be assisted by former Tottenham Hotspur first-team coach Chris Ramsey for this annual friendly competition.

Ramsey was Peter Taylor’s assistant manager in last year’s U20 World Cup, 14 years after he led that same age group at the FIFA World Youth Championship in Nigeria.

The former Brighton defender, who played in the 1983 FA Cup Final, has also worked with the England U16s and was a scout for former England boss Kevin Keegan.

Peacock, who has led two separate England U17 sides to European glory, said: “It’s good to have Chris back on board.

“He’s a very experienced coach and obviously worked for The FA many years ago.

“He was assistant coach at the U20s World Cup in Turkey last year and it was good to call on Chris to assist me for this tournament.”

England will get their tournament under way against Czech Republic at Aggborough Stadium in Kidderminster.

They will then take on Portugal in Chesterfield on 29 August before wrapping things up against Italy in Burton on 31 August.

Former England defender Phil Neville will shadow Peacock and Ramsey for the opening two matches.

Neville was a first team coach at Manchester United under David Moyes and he helped coach the Under-21s at last year’s European Championship.

Peacock added: “Phil has come into shadow me for the first two games. He finished playing not so long ago and is starting off in his coaching career.

“He’s an ex-England international. It will be great to have him around the place, good experience for the boys to learn from someone like Phil and it gives him an insight into what we’re trying to achieve with the future development of these players.”

The FA International Tournament represents the U17s’ first action of the season and acts as preparation for the opening round of Euro qualifiers which take place in October.

England, the holders, have been drawn alongside France, Macedonia and host nation Cyprus.
