Rafael Nadal wins Mercedes Cup, his first grass title since Wimbledon 2010

Rafael Nadal earned his second title of the season and his fourth on grass as he defeated Serb Viktor Troicki 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 on Sunday to become the first man to triumph on both clay and turf at the Stuttgart Open.

After sealing a tight first set with his ninth ace of the match, Nadal broke early in the second set and sealed the win in one hour 27 minutes.

“I’m really, really happy,” said Nadal following what is only his fourth title on grass.

“It’s my second win this year and it gives me a lot of confidence. It was a great week for me.”

The 14-time Grand Slam winner has dropped to number 10 in the world rankings after a disappointing season so far, which earlier this month saw him fail in his quest to win a tenth French Open title.

While most of the leading Wimbledon contenders opted to rest this week now that there is a new three-week gap between the French Open and Wimbledon, Nadal used the opportunity to brush up his grass court skills and will also feature in the Aegon Championships at Queen’s Club this week, taking on Alexanr Dolgopolov of Ukraine on Tuesday.
