New Hammers deal for Potts

England Under-20 international Dan Potts is targeting a first-team spot at West Ham United after signing a new deal with the club.

The defender, who appeared for the Three Lions at the U20 World Cup in Turkey last summer, has 12 appearances to his name for the Hammers since making his debut it 2011.

Having seen Mark Noble and James Tomkins progress through the club’s academy, Potts believes he has the perfect examples to follow and says he is determined to follow in their footsteps by establishing himself in Sam Allardyce’s side.

Potts said: “I definitely take inspiration from those players who have come through the ranks to become established in the first team. Nobes and Tonks especially proved last year how good they are.

“I want to be pushing on and playing first team football this season”

“They’ve done it, they’ve come through the Academy and are regular Premier League players. Last year they were two of our best players and you can only be inspired by that.

“We’ve got an experienced bunch of players and when you’re around them you pick up little things – as a young player you can only learn, get better and grow as a player.”

Potts, who has represented England at U18 and U19 level too, made just two appearances last season for West Ham before he went on loan to Portsmouth where he played six times.

And it was that spell away from the club that really whetted his appetite for first-team football.

Speaking to WHUFC.com, Potts added: “I want to be pushing on and playing first team football this season, so hopefully I can and hopefully I will.

“When I went on loan to Portsmouth last year, I definitely reaped the benefits from playing in front of crowds, in a first team environment with older players.

“It benefitted me as a player and more first team football is definitely the aim.”

Potts will be hoping to impress England U21 boss Gareth Southgate and win a place in his squad for the final European Championship qualifiers against Lithuania and Moldova in September.
