Molly Huddle : Runner celebrates too early, loses World bronze

Molly Huddle’s best finish ever in a major international outdoor meet ended up being one of the biggest disappointments in the Elmira native’s track and field career.

Athletes are taught their whole lives to carry on running through the finish line, but the American long-distance runner certainly isn’t the first to have made the mistake.

With two metres remaining, the 30-year-old threw her arms into the air thinking she had bagged herself a medal, only for compatriot Emily Infeld to pip her on the line.

The 400m world record holder Michael Johnson said of the blunder: ‘She is disappointed and embarrassed and may never have that opportunity ever again. That medal was hers.’

    Love it when football players get caught celebrating before scoring and fumble, or better yet, get the ball knocked loose. Same here-so glad the woman behind caught up to win over somebody too busy gloating. Great lesson for so many, and in another sport–perseverance, “never give up” and don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched. Thanks, and sorry about that, ma’am!
