Missing 2 Year Old Found dead in Fayette County, Sheriffs Say

Police said a missing 2-year-old was found dead in a runoff pond near his house in Fayette County.

A member of the search team was combing the banks of the pond with a search-and-rescue tool at 6:49 p.m. when he discovered the body of LeRoy J. Toppins beneath the surface of the water, Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth said in a release.

The Fayette County coroner pronounced the child dead at the scene, Stanforth said.

The toddler’s parents reported him missing about 6 p.m. on Friday from the Staunton-Sugar Grove Road area, where he was last seen playing in the yard.

The report triggered a search of nearby creeks, woods and the former Sugar Creek Stone Quarry by fire and police agencies from throughout central and southern Ohio as well as numerous volunteers, the sheriff said.

Divers searched the quarry and other waterways while a ground search was conducted on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles, he said. A State Highway Patrol helicopter also assisted.

A staging area for the search was established at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church in Washington Court House.
