Michael Phelps Arrested : US swimmer Charged With Second DUI

Updated: October 1, 2014

Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was arrested for driving while under the influence early Tuesday morning, according to police.

Phelps was pulled over around 1:40 a.m., TMZ reported. “Police said Phelps was speeding excessively and crossing double lane lines within the Fort McHenry Tunnel on Interstate 95 in Baltimore,” WBAL reported.

He failed a field sobriety test and his blood alcohol content was almost twice the legal limit, according to TMZ.

Police said Phelps was cooperative and was later released, WBAL reported.

It was the 29-year-old’s second DUI arrest. In 2004, a 19-year-old Phelps struck a plea deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in exchange for 18 months probation.

Police in Maryland were said to be preparing a statement for the media.

Phelps won 18 gold medals in his Olympic swimming career dating back to the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. He’s also taken home two silvers and two bronze medals.
