Actor Richard Schaal has died, aged 86. The Mary Tyler Moore Show regular, who also appeared in the comedy show’s spin-offs Rhoda and Phyllis, passed away at the Motion Picture and Television Fund retirement home in Woodland Hills, California on Tuesday (04Nov14).
Born on May 5, 1928, Schaal was a frequent guest star on the stable of “MTM” sitcoms with multiple appearances on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” “Rhoda” and “Phyllis,” which was a one season stint. His other regularly scheduled TV roles were in 1963 sitcom “Just Our Luck” and 1988-89 drama “Almost Grown,” and he also guest starred in series like “I Dream of Jeannie,” “That Girl,” “The Doris Day Show,” “The Rockford Files,” “Police Woman” and “Trapper John, M.D.” Schaal also appeared in films such as “Slaughterhouse-Five” and “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming.”
Schaal was married three times, including second wife Valerie Harper from 1964-78, and is the father of actress Wendy Schaal.
