Marlin Chinn: FIU women's bball coach accused of sexual misconduct

Marlin Chinn has been suspended after one of his players told The Miami Herald that he pursued her sexually and gave her a $600 loan.

According to the Miami Herald, 22-year-old Destini Feagin said first-year women’s basketball head coach Marlin Chinn has been pursing the relationship over the course of the season and filed an NCAA complaint.

The star player, senior captain of the FIU women’s basketball team, has been benched. “A lot of the attention is on her,” said FIU student Ashley Chin. “She’s a really good player.”

Feagin has been on the sidelines since last week, after she said in an interview with the Miami Herald that she filed claims of sexual harassment against the coach with the school and the NCAA.

She told the Herald that the energy Chinn brought at the beginning of the year for the team turned into unwanted attention toward her. “I noticed he has a sexual attraction for me when he started saying perverted things to me,” she said in the interview. “Commenting on my looks, my body, frame, my breasts, my behind. The way I smile. He would go into detail what his sexual thoughts were.”

After the report was published, the university released a statement that read, “FIU is conducting an investigation into allegations made against Coach Marlin Chinn. Based on the allegations, the university has suspended Coach Chinn, pending the outcome of the investigation. Because this is an ongoing investigation, the university will not provide additional comments at this time.”

According to the news report, Feagin has screen shots of text messages from Chinn. One read: “Hey Sista!!! I ain’t seen u in a while!! Got to put my Good Eye on u!!”

Another text message sent Dec. 18 said, “I want you to have so much more to offer anyone that wants to be apart of u after they get pass how good ur face and body looks!!!”

Last year, Feagin accepted money from the head coach in order to pay a debt to FIU, which is in direct violation of NCAA rules. “He took me to the bank, gave me $600 in cash,” Feagin told the Herald. “I went to pay the debt on my account. The day after I received the money, he called me. I said, ‘Coach, how could I ever repay you?’ I was thankful, showing gratitude, humbleness. I really appreciated that. He said, ‘You will pay me back. In other ways.’ He said that six times. It’s vivid in my head.”

She also told the reporter that Chinn admitted to her that he has had “sexual fantasies” about her. She also alleged he has grabbed her posterior.

The 45-year-old head coach declined to comment to the Miami Herald, and FIU athletic director Pete Garcia is hush about the subject, as well, according to the report.

Feagin said she reported Chinn’s alleged sexual advances Thursday.

7News has reached out to Feagin for comment on the allegations. However, she has not returned our calls.
