Marcus Mariota: Titans QB to miss Falcons game with knee injury

Marcus Mariota will not play when the Titans face Atlanta on Sunday, Tennessee coach Ken Whisenhunt said Friday morning.

Marcus Mariota underwent an MRI on Monday, which revealed that he had a sprained MCL in his left knee.

“He’s frustrated because he wants to play,” Whisenhunt said of Mariota.

The quarterback sustained the injury in the first half of the Titans’ 38–10 loss to the Dolphins last week on a low hit by Miami defensive end Olivier Vernon. Mariota played the rest of the game with a knee brace.

Vernon was penalized for roughing the passer on the play. After the game, Whisenhunt said he felt that Vernon’s hit was dirty.

On Wednesday, Vernon said the NFL had fined him for the controversial hit and that he planned to file an appeal.

Zach Mettenberger will be starting in place of Mariota.
