Man Shoots Armadillo, Bullet Ricochets Back Into His Face - Details

A man had a close call Thursday when he shot at an armadillo and the bullet ricocheted, striking his face.

Police say the unnamed Texan got a glimpse of the creature in his garden early on Thursday morning and decided to gun it down.

Sheriff Larry Rowe of Cass County Police said: “His wife was in the house. He went outside and took his .38 revolver and shot three times at the armadillo.”

But the small animal’s leathery shell would save its life, deflecting the bullet back and into the man’s jaw.

The episode will have animal-lovers wishing Walter Palmer, the dentist who notoriously slaughtered Cecil the Lion last month, went after armadillos instead.

Police say the man survived the encounter after being airlifted to a nearby hospital in Texarkana, USA, but had to have his jaw wired shut.

It is not known whether the armadillo survived the shooting.

“We didn’t find the armadillo,” Sheriff Rowe said.

In April, another armadillo deflected a gunman’s bullet, with the shot then hitting the shooter’s mum-in-law.
