Madonna felt like a prisoner when married to Guy Ritchie - Watch

Madonna has stated that she ‘felt like a prisoner’ during her marriage to film director Guy Ritchie.

The singer, 56, married British director Ritchie, 46, in 2000 but she has now told The Sun that he stopped her from being the person she wanted to be.

“I did find myself sometimes in a state of conflict. There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don’t think my ex-husband felt comfortable with,” she said. “There were times when I felt incarcerated. I wasn’t really allowed to be myself.”

“I think when you get married you have to be willing to make a lot of compromises and that’s fair enough. I think that’s the way it goes in relationships,” she said.

Madonna has previously opened up about the split, saying in 2012 that the pair fell out of love.

“As time goes by, and you share a life, you have children, and there are cracks in the veneer,” she said. “It’s not as romantic as it used to be. You think, ‘This isn’t what I thought it was going to be,’ and ‘How much am I willing to sacrifice?;”.

Ritchie has said in the past that he felt like his marriage to Madonna made his life a “soap opera.”
