Kyemah McEntyre : Teen makes her own stunning prom dress, sends inspiring message

Kyemah McEntyre made headlines across the internet on June 9th after designing her own beautiful prom dress and bringing home the title of Prom Queen at Cicely Tyson School of Performing Arts.

The 18-year-old from New Jersey says that, as an artist, she seeks to celebrate people’s differences, to look beyond the stereotypes.

To celebrate her own individuality – and to stick a finger up at people who have bullied her in the past – she decided to sketch and design her own dress for senior prom.

She posted the pictures of her creation, which was brought to life local seamstress Markell on Instagram earlier this week. And it’s stunning. Met Gala-level stunning.

She even tied in her date’s accessories. Great attention to detail.

Alongside the picture Kyemah McEntyre wrote: ‘We stunt our collective spiritual growth by allowing assumptions and stereotypes to cloud our mind and thus our physical reality. We let these negative ideas get the best of us.’
She adds: ‘The most creative people are the ones who step out of their comfort zone and take advantage of the world around them.

‘Don’t let anyone define you. Beautiful things happen when you take pride in yourself.’

The picture has had almost 10,000 likes.

Kyemah McEntyre had this message for the people who bullied her when she was younger: ‘This is for always being labeled as, “ugly” or “angry”. Thank God, stereotypes are just opinions.’
And of course she was voted prom queen. Because QUEEN.

Kyemah McEntyre is off to Parsons School of Design in New York this autumn – the same place where Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, and Donna Karan learnt their trade.
