Killer whales surrounds kayaker near San Juan Island - Watch

A group of kayakers near the San Juan Islands in Washington state were lucky enough to have a once in a lifetime experience recently.

Michelle Feis said she was kayaking with a guide into Roche Harbour when the pair encountered what she described as up to 30 orcas.

“We moved our kayak as close to the cliffs and in the kelp as possible to be out of their way and stopped paddling while we watched them play and move through Open Bay,” Feis wrote. “But they were everywhere and we ended up being in the route of a few as seen.”

In the video several killer whales can be seen surfacing and coming towards her. At one point a whale can be seen swimming beneath her boat.

Researchers have been tracking an increase in the orca population off the Pacific Coast, known as Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKW).
