Justin Wilson is in a coma after a severe head injury.

Justin Wilson was struck by a piece of debris during the IndyCar care at Pocono Raceway Sunday.

Wilson’s car veered to the left as soon as the piece of debris struck his helmet and ended up in the inside wall on the exit of Turn 1. Safety workers acted immediately to extricate Wilson from the number-25 Andretti Autosport Honda.

Once Wilson was taken out of his car, he was airlifted to Lehigh Valley Network Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pennsylvania. It is believed that Wilson was unconscious and not responding when he was airlifted to the hospital.

IndyCar released a short statement confirming that Wilson was in a coma and is in critical condition while undergoing further evaluation.
