Joseph Patterson sentenced to life in prison for death of Adrian Peterson's son

Joseph Patterson was sentenced to life without parole for killing the son of NFL star and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson in 2013.

A Lincoln County judge delivered his sentence for Joseph Patterson Thursday afternoon.

Patterson addressed the court before his sentencing. He did not ask for forgiveness from Tyrese’s family, because he says he’s not guilty.

Judge Bradley Zell sentenced Joseph Patterson only on his 2nd degree murder conviction. No sentence was imposed for 1st degree manslaughter. Patterson is not eligible for parole.

In September, Patterson was found guilty of killing Tyrese Ruffin, the son of Ashley Doohen and Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.

Patterson’s defense argued that Tyrese choked on a fruit snack. A doctor who testified for the defense said autopsy photos indicate injuries consistent with a child being given CPR after choking.

Prosecutors argued Patterson assaulted Tyrese while they were alone in an apartment.

Joseph Patterson had pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and other charges.
