Jared Allen Starting Super Bowl: Panthers LB Thomas Davis and DE Allen will start Sunday

Coach Ron Rivera says he expects linebacker Thomas Davis and defensive end Jared Allen to start for Panthers on Sunday in the Super Bowl.

The 2015 All-Pro was a full participant in practice Thursday, which made it likely he would be cleared today. Davis broke his arm in the NFC championship game against the Arizona Cardinals when a player jumped onto him unexpectedly. The day after, he had screws and a metal plate inserted into his arm. He’s currently hopeful he’ll be able to play Sunday.

Allen fractured his foot in his team’s victory over the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the playoffs and was held out of the NFC Championships two weekends ago even though he said he’d still have been able to play.

Both players are a key part of the hounding Panthers defense that is ranked as one of the better ones in the nation. Davis had 75 tackles with 5.5 sacks this year, his fourth straight season of 70-plus tackles. Allen, who has lost a step from his ‘hey-days’ with Minnesota, is still an imposing force off the the edge who has the ability to make life rough on a non-mobile quarterback like Peyton Manning.

The Super Bowl starts at 6:30et/3:30pt on Sunday on all CBS stations.
