Janis Joplin's Porsche could sell for $400000 - Watch

JANIS Joplin’s amazing psychedelic Porsche is coming up for sale at Sotheby’s in New York.

Auction house RM Sotheby’s said the Porsche 356C 1600 Cabriolet would go on the block on December 10 in New York and estimated the sale would generate more than $US400,000.

Purchased secondhand in 1968, Janis owned the – originally pearl-white – car until death in 1970. Artist Dave Richards, one of Janis’ friends, painted the psychedelic mural on the car after Janis complained about it looking too boring. Janis was frequently seen driving the car around San Francisco and her sister, Laura Joplin, recalls that there would always be at least one note from a fan under the wipers whenever it was parked up.

The Porsche was passed to Janis’ family after her death and has been displayed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland for the last 20 years. It’s believed the distinctive paintwork apparently thwarted an attempt to steal it in 1969.

‘Janis Joplin’s 356C is iwthout question one of the most important Porsches of all time,’ says Ian Kelleher, Managing Director of RM Sotheby’s West Coast Division. ‘It’s a fantastic automobile that transcends art, pop culture and social movements, and is as groundbreaking and stunning as the renowned singer was herself.’
