James Robertson : Fundraiser helps get car for Detroit man who commutes 21 miles a day — by foot

James Robertson – Fundraiser for walker with killer commute reaches $200K, More than 5,000 people have donated since the story of Robertson, a 56-year-old factory worker with perfect attendance, was featured on the front page of the Detroit Free Press on Sunday.

For a decade, Robertson has made the gruelling commute from his Detroit home north to his job in Rochester Hills since his car broke down, the Free Press reported.

The roundtrip trek — including a daily bus ride as far as it will go and walking the rest of the way — takes him about 10 1/2 hours each day.

His job pays $10.55 an hour — not enough for him to save for a new car and pay for insurance, Robertson says.

University student Evan Leedy, 19, launched the online fundraiser. A dealership has since offered to buy Robertson a new compact car, strangers proposed to give him a car, and one man even volunteered to chauffeur him to work and back each day for free.
