Footage has been released by the New York Police Department of the moment former US tennis star James Blake was arrested in a case of mistaken identity.
The former world number four was waiting at the entrance to the Grand Hyatt hotel in Manhattan before attending a match at the US Open this week.
But he was slammed to the floor by an officer, who did not approach Blake beforehand, and promptly arrested.
Blake was taken to the police station and was then released 15 minutes later when it realised that he was not the main suspect in alleged fraud.
The officer, named in some reports as James Frascatore, has been stripped of his badge and gun and placed on ‘administration duties’ pending a full investigation into the incident.
Blake said he believed there was ‘probably’ a race factor involved in the ‘unnecessary force’ used in his arrest and added ‘there’s no reason for anybody to do that’.
