Jameis Winston threatens lawsuit against CNN over documentary.
Days before CNN is scheduled to air The Hunting Ground, a well-received documentary about campus rape, Jameis Winston is alleging that the film is defamatory.
“We are writing to formally caution CNN that portions of the film ‘The Hunting Ground’ pertaining to Mr. Winston are false and defamatory to Mr. Winston,” states a letter reportedly sent to CNN’s Jeff Zucker and obtained by the Hollywood Reporter.
Jameis Winston was accused of rape by Erica Kinsman during his Heisman-winning season, and subsequent criticism followed the investigation by the Tallahassee Police Department and Florida State University who decided to take no action against Winston. The Hunting Ground highlights the high-profile rape case and features the one-sided account of Kinsman as she comes forward, speaking publicly about the allegations for the first time.
The letter cites that the film “manipulate, misstates, or simply omits facts to present a false narrative,” as Winston’s attorney John Boudet points out the omission “of this abundant exculpatory evidence” such as toxicology reports, medical examinations, and eyewitnesses.
Kinsman and Winston are currently battling in court as she’s sued him for sexual battery and he’s fired back with counterclaims that she had consensual sexual relations with him, repeatedly lied about it, and publicly tarnished his image.
FSU has also asked CNN not to air the film, voicing it’s critique of the film’s inaccuracy and unfairness.
