Gerrard upbeat

Steven Gerrard says England’s forwards can cause Uruguay’s defence significant problems when the pair meet in Thursday’s World Cup showdown in Sao Paulo.

Uruguay were beaten 3-1 by Costa Rica on Saturday and Gerrard believes that although their opponents also have a potent strikeforce, if the Three Lions replicate their performance against Italy they will come away with all three points.

He said: “They have really good firepower up front but we saw on Saturday that they are certainly beatable.

“They concede goals and if we attack like we did against Italy we will cause Uruguay big, big problems.”

Uruguay pose a serious attacking threat themselves with the likes of Edison Cavani, Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez at their disposal.

And although Suarez missed Uruguay’s opener against Cost Rica, Gerrard says he is expecting his fellow Liverpool striker to recover in time to face England.

“I’m not sure where Suarez is up to injury-wise,” he added.

“I haven’t heard from him, but I expect him to play some part because he’s been so quiet.”

“The key for us is to look back on what’s happened, see what we got right but also see where we went wrong.

“They created problems for us on our left side on a few occasions and we will have to look at that.”

And Gerrard says England will be aiming for maximum points in each of their remaining Group D games as they bid to knock-out stage for the fifth successive FIFA World Cup.

“We’ve got two big games and if we take six points we are going through,” he added.

“I’ve got to try to pick these lads up and we go against Uruguay.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down as quickly as possible and bounce back.”

England take on Uruguay in Sao Paulo on Thursday 19 June at 8pm BST.

The game is live on ITV and coverage starts at 7pm.
