Gary Southern charged fraud : West Virginia Chemical Spill Executive Arrested for Fraud

Gary Southern facing federal fraud charges, President of Freedom Industries during the January 2014 MCHM spill into the Elk River, is facing charges of bankruptcy fraud, lying under oath and wire fraud.

According to the complaint filed Monday FBI investigators say Southern lied in his testimony during bankruptcy hearings surrounding the former company Freedom Industries.

Freedom Industries is at the heart of a chemical leak which tainted the water supply for 300,000 West Virginia residents back in January of 2014.

The little-known company behind the disaster, Freedom Industries, was swiftly besieged by dozens of lawsuits and then hustled into bankruptcy court after 10,000 gallons of a coal-cleaning chemical leaked into the Elk River in West Virginia.

The complaint alleges that Southern lied in attempt to minimize his involvement with the company and to protect his own assets.

Gary Southern is out on a $100,000 bond.
