Football player loses his leg in freak accident on the field

A freak stroke of bad luck turned a Florida high schooler’s serious but treatable injury into a situation so severe it required the boy’s leg to be amputated.

The Northeast High School student’s injury occurred during Friday night’s game against Clearwater High School. The game was delayed for almost half an hour while medical personnel worked on 17-year-old Leshawn Williams. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.

Northeast coach Jeremy Frioud told The Tampa Bay Times on Monday that the surgery was successful.

The Times reported the 6-foot, 330-pound Williams spent the weekend at Bayfront Hospital in St. Petersburg. The surgery took place Sunday after unsuccessful efforts to reestablish circulation.
