‘Food Network Star’ contestant and husband killed; murder suspect Charged in N.C.

Authorities have accused a neighbor of the couple, Robert “Jason” Owens, of killing the pair on Thursday. The 36-year-old, who briefly did construction on the couple’s home, reportedly broke in and stole several items, including a laptop, jewelry and a handgun.

Owens, who was also a suspect in the 2000 disapearance of teenager Zebb Quinn, has been charged with first-degree murder, murder of an unborn child, breaking and entering, and larceny after breaking and entering following the deaths of Cristie Schoen and Joseph Codd. Cristie was reportedly five months pregnant when she died.

It is unclear if the bodies of Cristie Schoen and Joseph Codd have been found. But cops did discover the couple’s dogs and vehicles at their homes after their presumed deaths.

Cristie Schoen Codd rose to fame as a contestant on Season 8 of the reality competition Food Network Star. She was mentored by Alton Brown on the show, where she pitched her idea for a healthy cooking series. Cristie, who also catered for movie sets, was ultimately eliminated in the first week.

“I’m really disappointed that I did not make it close to the top because I do have such an important message to share,” Cristie said after her Food Network Start elimination. “I wasn’t able to communicate that message out.”
