Family Stolen Hearse : Man Detained After Allegedly Stealing Hearse With Casket Inside

Family chase down stolen hearse containing body of loved one, A man who was suspected of being mentally ill allegedly stole a hearse that contained a casket during a funeral in South Park Saturday morning, according to Los Angeles Police Department officials.

The thief hopped in the idling black hearse outside Ebenezer Baptist Church in Los Angeles at 11 a.m. and drove off with the body of Jonté Lee Reed, 19, in the back, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The funeral director had left the car running while arranging flowers before the funeral, the pastor’s wife, Shirley Little, said. When he came outside to grab the casket, he realized the car was missing and notified Reed’s family members.

“When I got there, there’s no hearse, there’s no body,” Reed’s aunt Johnnie Fortune told KTLA. “A lot of people went chasing after the car.”

Relatives spotted the hearse four blocks from the church. They forced the driver to pull over and fought with him verbally and physically, according to KTLA.

Police arrived on the scene, took the man into custody and had his mental condition evaluated. He will be charged with auto theft.

The hearse and coffin were returned to the church on a truck without any apparent disturbance to the body.

The funeral was delayed by only 30 minutes.
