'Duct Tape Challenge': Teen warning others after close call in latest challenge going viral

‘Duct tape challenge’ lands teen in hospital.

A new internet challenge is proving to be dangerous and a western Washington 14-year-old learned that lesson the hard way. Skyler Fish has been in the hospital since January 16th after an attempt at the “duct tape challenge” turned into a fight for his life.

The duct tape challenge has been made popular by teens through YouTube and social media. A simple search will bring up dozens of videos where kids are duct taped to trees, poles, buildings or taped free standing and then try to break free.

Fish doesn’t remember much from that day, but surveillance video shows that after his arms and legs were duct taped together, he lost his balance and unable to catch himself, slammed his face into a cement window frame.

The fall shattered his eye socket, cheek bone and caused a brain aneurysm. He has since had brain surgery, receiving 48 staples to stitch up his head. At this point, doctors still can’t say if he’ll ever be able to see again using his left eye.

His mother wants to warn other parents and children about the duct tape challenge so an accident like this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

As for Fish, he says he hopes something good will come out of all he’s been through. “When I think about it, I become sad,” he says tearfully, “and then really happy. I’m happy because I survived it. I almost died.”
