Flushing fats and toxins out of our bodies is all about science, not willpower. This is what Dr. Mark Hyman (right in photo of this recap) underscored in The Dr. Oz Show when he talked about his 3-day Fat Flush Plan. Dr. Hyman explained that fat-causing toxins in the body affect the chemistry in the brain and slows down metabolism, both of which lead to unnecessary weight gain. His diet program calls for natural foods rich in fatty acids, protein and fiber that stave off hunger and lead to an average weight loss of 4 pounds. This program can be implemented every 3 months to reset the body’s chemistry.
Quality over quantity. Dr. Hyman (the author of Blood Sugar Solution, 10-Day Detox Diet and The Ultra Simple Diet, among others) explained that processed and sugar-rich foods disrupt the signals sent from our brains to our stomach and how hormones ought to function. These make us feel hungry more and slow down metabolism. A lot of fad diet plans call for the minimization of food intake and some even go to the extreme of exacting the effects of a hunger strike. While these diet plans may work in the short-term period, those who try it eventually go back to their normal eating routine and gain back the weight that they’ve previously lost. Dr. Hyman’s science-based plan calls for the opposite: the right kind of food corrects toxin-caused problems in the body and quantity is no issue at all. More importantly, the plan fights inflammation, rids toxins, decreases insulin resistance and flushes fat.
Fat-flush broth. The star of Dr. Hyman’s diet program is a vegetable broth that provides energy, satisfies hunger and trains the taste buds to appreciate the natural taste of vegetables. The recipe calls for onions, carrots, celery, white radish root, squash, kale, cabbage, ginger root, garlic and seaweeds. All ingredients are boiled in water for an hour before straining the vegetables and keeping the liquid residue for storage. Dr. Hyman recommends intake of 3 to 4 cups a day.
Fatty acids, protein & fiber. Omega-3 fats are responsible for eradicating unwanted body fats while speeding up metabolism. To start the day right, Dr. Hyman encourages having 2 to 3 handfuls of nuts and seeds, followed by a breakfast shake consisting of unsweetened almond milk, pumpkin seeds, almond butter and flax oil. Strawberries are blended in for that natural sweet taste. To flush out the toxins in the digestive tract, a tablespoon of coconut oil (preferably extra virgin) mixed in a glass of water is also recommended. Meanwhile, lunch and dinner meals should be rich in protein (3 to 4 ounces a day) and fiber (2 cups a day). A complete list of food items for the diet plan is available in The Dr. Oz Show’s official website.
