Di Stefano passes away

The Football Association is saddened to learn of the passing of Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano.

One of the greatest players to have ever played the game, his former club confirmed that the Argentina-born forward died in hospital in Madrid on Monday afternoon.

Upon confirming the news, Real president Florentino Perez said he and the club’s board would “like to express deepest condolences and all their love and affection to his children, their families and friends”.

During a glittering career, Di Stefano won eight Spanish titles, five European Cups and was voted European Player of the Year in 1957 and 1959.

At Wembley in October 1963, Di Stefano captained a Rest of the World XI – containing Ferenc Puskas, Eusebio, Lev Yashin and Denis Law – in a match to celebrate The FA’s 100th anniversary.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.
