Demitri Allison died this afternoon after falling from a residence hall at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, according to Elon Dean of Students Smith Jackson.
Demitri Allison, a native of Cornelius, N.C., was majoring in management. He played in all 9 games for the Phoenix this season.
Law enforcement officials said he fell from Morrison Residence Hall Wednesday afternoon. Allison had left Elon’s campus, and teammates, family and friends had asked police to look for him because they were concerned for his well-being, an Elon official said in a letter to the campus.
“The death of any student is devastating to our community, especially in situations like this, and we want to reach out to friends and acquaintances who knew Demitri. The loss of a classmate, friend and student reminds us that the life of each person in our community is precious,” Elon Athletics Director Dave Blank said in a statement. “This loss is particularly painful for the Phoenix athletics family, and the football team’s Chaplain is providing counseling for the players and staff. Everyone associated with Elon athletics is devastated. Demitri was a talented young man with a bright future who was loved by his teammates. We mourn his loss deeply and we pray for his family and loved ones.”
Grief counselors were being made available to students on the Elon campus late Wednesday, and a “gathering of friends” will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Rhodes Stadium.
The Elon football team is scheduled to play at Maine, Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
