‘Complete performance’

Arsene Wenger described Arsenal’s FA Community Shield victory as a “complete performance” after they saw off Premier League champions Manchester City in style.

The FA Cup holders ran out comfortable 3-0 winners at Wembley, courtesy of goals from Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.

And after the game the Arsenal boss was quick to heap praise on his charges.

“I felt we had a complete performance in the first half and we stuck together well in the second half,” said Wenger.

“Today was good preparation – it was important to win today and now we focus on a very different game next week.

“It was important for our confidence to win the game, we also had a quality performance and that is comforting for me”

The Frenchman added: “We defended well, we lost a bit more of the ball than in the first half and our movements were less fluent but we kept the spirit and organisation. The first half was very exciting.”

Wenger included  a trio of new signings in his starting eleven and admitted he was pleased with all three. But he was quick to point out that there’s still more to come from his most expensive acquisition of the summer.

“For a 19-year-old, Calum Chambers had an outstanding performance today. He was very impressive,” the Gunners boss told the assembled media.

“Debuchy was excellent, Alexis was lively and was always a threat but he is not quite ready.”

One of the keys to Arsenal’s victory was some ruthless finishing which saw them score with three of their four shots on target.

And Wenger admits that his forward line is now one to be feared.

“I have more attacking options than I had for a long time – that’s for sure,” he said.

“We are a strong squad. Three, four, five years ago, every year we lost a big player. In the last two years, we added players like Ozil and this season like Alexis, so of course that strengthens the squad.

“I am of course very ambitious but I’m a bit cautious because I have quite a good experience.

“I look around and see the other teams have strengthened as well, so it will be interesting to watch the Premier League because it looks like all the big teams will be very strong.”
