Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya wins Indy 500 after late duel

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya came from the back of field to win the 99th Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

Starting in 15th place and dropping back to 30th, Montoya rallied to back to win his second 500 and his first since 2000.

“This is what racing and Indy Car is all about,” said Montoya. “It’s awesome racing all the way down to the wire.”

Montoya, Will Power and Scott Dixon traded the top three spots over the final 12 laps of green flag racing.

Power, another Penske driver, finished second. Charlie Kimball passed Dixon to take third.

Montoya joins Helio Castroneves as the only drivers to win twice in their first three Indy 500 starts.

The win gives team Penske its 16th Indy 500 victory.
