A mysterious driver was spotted on the road with a cat tied to the front of her car and it wasn’t because she was driving a Jaguar.

The woman was spotted driving her Buick off-roader though New Philadelphia in the north eastern state by shocked resident Polly Vandall, who took a number of photos.

After posting the image on Facebook, several concerned locals subsequently phoned the police. Describing the situation, Ms Vandall said on the social media site: “There I was, sitting at a red light, in the middle of town. I look up and see….. Cat. On a leash. Tied to the hood of a car. Driving through town. ‪#thisJustHappened‬.”

After being posted on Facebook, the image has been widely circulated online, with many fearing that the animal’s life may be at risk. Police are now thought to be looking for the elderly woman, to establish whether the cat is in any danger.

Talking to the New York Daily News Vandall said: “Immediately, I was thinking ‘How in the world did that cat get on there?’

“I don’t believe she drives around town with a cat on, you know? I thought there’s probably a really good story behind this.”

Local police chief Michael Goodwin has said that these images have raised many concerns, the Daily Mail reports: “There was a lot of outrage that wanted these people hunted down, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and should never own a pet. It was pretty ugly on that end.”
