Angels acquire Andrelton Simmons

The Angels stole the headlines by trading for shortstop Andrelton Simmons from the Braves.

Andrelton Simmons, 26, is considered an elite defensive shortstop with league average hitting. In 2015 he slashed .265/.321/.338 with four home runs and 3.2 fWAR in 147 games played. He is locked up through 2020 and is owed about $43 million.

Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that Erick Aybar is heading to the Braves and Alden Gonzalez of says pitching prospect Sean Newcomb is on the move too. Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that pitching prospect Chris Ellis is being traded to Atlanta along with $3MM cash. Tim Brown of Yahoo says the final piece will be catching prospect Jose Briceno going to Anaheim.

Full trade as of right now: Simmons, Briceno to Anaheim for Erick Aybar, Sean Newcomb, Chris Ellis, and $3MM.

Newcomb and Ellis were ranked one and two as the best prospects in the Angels’ system by This leaves their system extremely dry of talent, but with the best player in the baseball it isn’t a bad idea to surround him with the most talent possible.

Briceno was ranked as the 25th best prospect in the Braves’ system and their second ranked catching prospect.
