Alexa PenaVega: This Chilling DWTS Dance Basically Brought Bulimia to Life

Alexa PenaVega might have dealt with criticism from the show’s judges on a weekly basis, but it turns out she was battling an even tougher critic behind closed doors: herself.

Alexa PenaVega recently went public with her own battle with the eating disorder, which she struggled with for six years, according to People. The 27-year-old actress revealed that it all began when movie producers “kept telling me, ‘You’re too fat.'”

“I struggled with bulimia for so long,” she said. “And even though I got through it, I feel like a lot of my insecurities from my body are from that.”

She continued, “You read textbooks and it’s just so, well, textbook. ‘This is how you get over bulimia.’ But it is so much deeper than that,” she continued. “I wish I’d had somebody who could have told me, ‘It’s scary.’ You struggle giving it up. You want to get rid of it but you struggle because, in a strange way, you enjoy it.”

PenaVega shed light on her secret through an emotional final dance on Monday night’s Dancing With the Stars, where she was really able to gain confidence and find the strength to open up.

“This is something that I was so afraid to talk about before, but this show has given me so much confidence,” she told People.

“I went through a big battle and all I wanted to do was move and inspire people and show them that bulimia is something that you can get over. That’s really all I wanted tonight. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end my time in the competition.”
